For two years now, Apple allows its users to download applications not exceeding 20 MB in 3G. This may seem little, yet the limit was lower before. Indeed, the maximum threshold was 10 MB Only, there is a day when this limit will be raised to suit the new conditions of use. Applications - in their early days - were not very applied knowledge that their contents were simplistic. Resolution images were also much lower (320 × 480), weight was reduced accordingly. But times change, as Apple devices. Today, the iPhone has doubled resolution (640 × 960). The images were therefore taken by weight. Moreover, applications of today are enriched, the Apple SDK was extended by new features that could give new rights to developers. The 20 MB limit is rather restrictive in some cases.
Why Apple is expected to increase the limit? Simply because of the arrival of the iPad 3. The new Apple tablet will have a Retina display. The weight of the images will be more than important. In addition, another problem is to impose: universal applications. Universal application includes both the iPhone version and version iPad in a single application. Suffice to say that the issue is not even to ask, Apple has to respond. But on the other hand, there is a problem, a big problem: the operators.
The operators offer mobile Internet offers so-called "unlimited" which are not really (that's another debate that we will not develop here). 500 MB in one, 1 GB in the other, etc.. The latter are also often complained about the judging that monopolized their iPhone traffic. Imagine if tomorrow the limit increased from 20 MB to 40/60 Mo. Mr. Orange, Mr. SFR, Bouygues Mr. and Mr. Free Mobile can be a gueulante would push against Apple. What is the solution?
Well, there are maybe two. Federico Viticci of MacStories think Apple could either make arrangements with operators, is reviewing the system to download from the App Store. Concretely, this would be to download what the device is in need. An iPad 2 for example does not would download the images to a dedicated Retina display and vice versa. This process would require a lot of work, however, hope that Apple has found a happy medium.
