Apple NanoSim

In order to gain still more room in its phones in 2010 Apple introduced with the iPhone 4, the MicroSIM. A few months ago, the company Giesecke & Devrient formalized the NanoSim. This is Apple's request, always anxious to reduce component size on its smartphones, this format was created. The chip measures 12 x 9 x 0.66mm against 15 x 12 x 0.76mm for MicroSim, a reduction of 30%.

This new SIM card is ready but Apple faces hostility from the competition: According to the Financial Times, Nokia, Motorola and RIM push their side their own format. Indeed, the firm has developed a card incorporating a sort of tray to protect it, what would be ideal to fit into the iPhone and the iPad, but less for other manufacturers who would have to adapt to this standard . This proposed standard would be licensed but Apple's competitors fear that keeps Cupertino patents goshawks of it.

Nokia admits that this design has undeniable "technical advantages" and Apple has already won support from major European operators. A decision must be made in the course of next week in the ETSI, the European regulatory standards.
